Yes, there are differences in how each can be plumbed. Copper tubing should be generally allowed, but not something like PVC or galvanized pipe. The big similarity is the "gas tight" aspect of all of the connections, which is similar to "water tight" that plumbers deal with on a regular basis. The licensed professionals are also supposed to keep up on the current codes, which is sometimes confusing to those of us looking at it from the outside. (Some areas require black pipe for plumbing of any flammable gas inside of a structure but will allow copper to be used to attach to the exterior connection to the source for propane. We plumb for hydrogen which is not common and every inspector has trouble with what should be required)
Tatum Insulation runs Propane and Natural Gas lines, and installs fireplaces for new and remodeled homes....And this is in multiple counties in NC. So you don't need to be licensed for a lot of it... But they do have to test it and have it inspected.
