There in lies part of the problem, the mass media convinced everyone that the economy was going down the tubes, the majority of the people listened and proceeded to slow their extra curicular activies, which in turn partially caused the economy to slow down, which in turn caused businesses to start laying people off and stream lining their operations. which in turn meant even less money going into the economy due to the layoffs which leads to more layoffs, etc. It boils down to a vicious circle of the fact that since we aren't spending money, companies are laying people off due to a downturn in sales, due to the layoffs people have less money to spend. And around and around it goes.......when's it gonna stop? Who knows?

My husband noticed a big drop in his business before the media made a big deal out of the economy. I do believe the media doesn't help though, but I spend according to what I have, not according to what the media says I should have. Although, we did start saving some again now, just to be safe. We don't know what the winter is going to be like, and it would be nice to eat every once in a while!

Depending on what your husband does/did part of the big drop in certain areas of business (using housing as a example) is that builders over built cheap houses on top of each other and expected each one to be sold shortly after completion. A quick turn that would inturn allow them to buy more land and build even more houses. But if one person is buying a house that means they are leaving a house empty, and before long the market itself was saturated with housing, be it new or used. And the market just didn't exist to support the rate of "expected growth".

We went to the Outer Banks which is all I really want to do anyway. We economized by sharing a house with my best friend and some of her family, pooled our food, and cooked in most nights. All those people to 2 bathrooms was a little rough but we had a great time.

We don't really take weeklong "vacations" anywhere, so that hasn't changed. It's a time away from work issue for us, not necessarily the $$.

I'm over here scratching my head with you. What is this word the webbie is speaking of?

And Craig, throwing money at this economy in hopes of it recovering is like giving drinks to an alcoholic.

cleo the reason i said that is cause i never get a vacation, we are disabled so we work pt and go to see relatives but i havent had a true vacation since i left my dads home.i was more worried about providing neccesities for my kids than to go to disney! on the other hand we lived in fl and i worked for disney so my kids did get to go there too many times!

Throwing money at the economy is better than taking everything I have and stuffing it in my mattress at night, cause all that is gonna do is create a really hard mattress to sleep on, which in turn will cause me restless/sleepless nights, not to mention make me paranoid of being robbed, because someone knows I'm stashing the cash instead of helping out other local business by spending it.

If you don't throw some money into the local economy the only things you will ahve left are the Walmarts of the world.....and we all know how you love Walmart.

Went with my sister to Myrtle Beach in May for a few days; got a 1 BR (2 beds!) oceanfront at Avista Resort for $79/night. One meal per day was eaten out: I had a $50 gift card for Outback that I had won (GREAT meal!), she had an Olive Garden gift card she got for Christmas (we had to oput about $10 towards that meal), so we paid OOP for the other 3 meals (dinner at River City Grill, breakfast at Golden Griddle on the way home, and lunch at some cheesesteak place at the Tanger Outlet Mall). All other meals were eaten at the condo w/ mostly stuff brought form home. We did pay to play putt putt one day, and we rented a Redbox movie one night (watched while we ate our doughnut from Krispy Kreme LOL!). All in all, a pretty cheap vacation.

We are headed back to Disney in September thanks to Free Dining. We already have park tickets (although you have to buy a one-day ticket w/ the FD package; we will save that for another trip), food is taken care of, first night is offsite wiht a free-night certificate I won, and I have enough MyPoints saved up to cover gas (get gas cards w/ the points). The whole trip should cost me no more than $400, probably less.

Did New York City back in March and Myrtle Beach two weeks ago. Gotta keep living even if the money is tight. Remember the end of time is in 2012 (lol). Better live it up while you can.

Some folks don't have money to stuff in their mattresses, so it doesn't make sense for them to spend what they do have just to try and jumpstart the economy taking a gambleontheir future. I sleep better at night knowing I will be able to afford to fill my gas tank and buy food for my kids if the jumpstart plan backfires. Ant/grasshopper.

And the sprouting of Walmarts has nothing to do with the stuffing of money, they wouldn't build them if people wouldn't peruse the aisles and pick up every other sparkly, shiny thing they see just because a sign says "Rollback". THAT is the mentality of people nowadays, and THAT is why we are in the situation we are in now. People have more money than brains, and they aren't happy unless they are spending it on beads and trinkets.

It is so family oriented. We found out too that alot of places are taking their rentals away from the agencies so they can reduce their rates. So I went on and found a bigger one for a little more than we paid for the 1 bedroom. Plus one night free.
