It was live coral there, I got scraped up pretty good and you HAVE to get it scrubbed with iodine and something else to keep the coral from growing in your body or blood stream and they used a really stiff brush. ouch...

really it was hot but not a bad heat... B-52's stay busy there.

You want a remote assignment try Comiso Airstation. I was stationed there for the base closure in 89-90. That was a remote assignment.

    Remote????

I was often threatened by my Division Commander, under whom I'd previously served at Fort Bragg, with a PCS (permanent change of station) for at least 3 years to McMurdo Sound.

As far as I knew, the only Army officers there were logisticians. I kept asking him to pull the trigger, as a fellow "loggie" had done a Winter Over. His job entailed getting the stuff there and delivered to the user, completed with hand receipts for all the stuff he brought. He said that took him three weeks. For the next 5 months, he tended that bar there, making TDY coin and keeping the tips he earned.

Eventually, the CG realized that sending me would have certainly gotten me out of his hair, but that I'd have enjoyed the trip and he felt it was easier to keep me nearby to abuse..I guess being a loggie with some years with him gave him the familiarity with me. Sure would have liked to have done that trip.

As far as remote in CONUS, it;s gotta be Fort Irwin, near Barstow, Calif. National Training Center, where you can still see tracks from maneuvers of Patton;s forces training for WWII.
Prior to the installation getting more family friendly, the nearest McDonalds was a 2 hour round trip, and Lord forbid if you went and didn't get takey outee for everyone in your section. MOT Sunny Point was next to that as being a tough place to be, but at least you had the beach nearby, and could get to civilization a little quicker.
