Well, he said it would go to increase teacher's salaries to the national average.

But, that is the least of our worries, now Easley wants even more money. He wants to cut school construction funding by 25% and dump it into his preschool program.

If this goes through, only 29% of the lottery proceeds will actually go towards "education" (or construction of schools). I was incorrect before (quite generous, really!). Currently 35% of the lottery proceeds go towards schools.

easley and his buddies raided the highway fund years ago. they've spent, not given back, SPENT 1 and 2 BILLION dollar surplusses in just the last five years or so. they railroaded the lottery through (google jim black for a taste of corruption to the core), as it's the only real issue easley ever ran on (except of course for the lovely tradition of attorney general 'don't break your arm patting yourself on the back' commercials on tv at taxpayer expense. he got his name out there on our dime for years before he ran for gov). they swore up and down that it was, as usual, "for the children". crapola. they redirected the first 200 million dollars in proceeds right after they convinced everyone that this money would go to schools. not replace other dollars, but in addition to them. turns out BIG SURPRISE THEY LIED. here is the n and o story. gotta pay back the general fund. which was short because we spent it. paying back the highway fund (which is still short, so we'll have to raise the gas tax 15% again. happened the first of this year).

guess what? 2007 is a BOOM year for taxes in nc. seems this fiscal year, already ten months old, the state has a surplus of 1.1 BILLION dollars in tax collections. hmm. whaddya know? WONDER IF THEY'LL GIVE ANY OF IT BACK TO US?

no, they'll say we're going to use it for teachers salaries, and state employee's raises, medicaid for your grandma, and we;re going to put some away for a rainy day, for your children's future!

politics as usual here. if you want to know where the money went, visit the lovely state teapot museum in sparta, nc. oh, wait. you can't. the sign has a real nice artists rendering though. sign's a little faded, though. it's been up for a couple of years so it's kinda weathered....nicest half million dollar sign you'll ever see....
