I read The Giver a few years ago and actually encouraged my then 5th grader to read it. I am a big reader and so is he. I do not believe in book censorship and neither does he. I think we as parents need to censor what our kids are reading but do not believe we have the right to do that for all.
My son read this in middle school at CMS years ago. He found it very thought-provoking as others mentioned, and also kind of creepy. He suggested I read it, and I did. The content did not bother us, but the plot and ideas introduced disturbed him. This is why he asked me to read it, so we could have a discussion. I believe as a parent, if you wish for your child not to read a particular book, an alternative assignment should be given. I don't believe in banning books from public schools at the middle and high school levels, but I do disagree with introducing liberal agendas in elementary age books
