Supposedly based on the distance from the city of Marathon and Rome.

As the story goes (with a bit of give and take, based on strict memory), there was a victory for Rome in the city of Marathon. The general commanded his messenger to run back to Rome to inform the Emporer of the success. The messenger ran the whole way (26.2 miles) without pausing to rest, arrived at the palace and delivered the message. Then he promply dropped dead from exhaustion.

The marathons run today are in memorium of that event.

 

When in Columbia SC you can see the Gamecocks version of the SC flag more predominantly.
