If Diet Pepsi could hurt you I would have died years ago.

First, the internet is not always a reliable source for health facts. You'll hear all sorts of horror stories online and a lot of it is overblown. At the same time, I don't necessarily believe fully in the FDA's studies of the safety of artificial sweetners either. I sort of fall into the middle there, wondering if its okay but looking at the data that would likely suggest an epidemic of health-related problems directly associated with years of aspartame usage if it was indeed poisonous. I think we tend to underestimate our bodies abilities to process that which we consume. If you throw out aspartame, consider all the other food ingredients that our bodies must endure. All the processed foods, preservatives, dyes and colorings, nitrates, etc.

Here's my philosophy on diet drinks. If it can help you maintain a healthier weight, drink it. You're much more likely to die prematurely or suffer long-term health consequences from obesity or elevated cholesterol. There's much more publicly known evidence to suggest that fat increases the risk of cancer more so than aspartame. We already know that carrying weight on our torso region is considered dangerous for heart health.

Now, if a person can avoid all artificial ingredients in foods and beverages, good for them. However, realistically most people like the foods we consume. The facts are that one of the worst added ingredients in our foods and beverages is sodium.

I stay away from it too - gives me a headache. I mostly drink water during the day (when at work) and 1 glass of tea (w/ sugar, no caff) at night with dinner, probably more on the weekends. If I drink a soda (which is really rare) I drink the real thing - diet etc tastes yucky to me. 8)

Here's one not to try -
    LaCroix Grapefruit Sparkling Water.

It's more like sparkling dish water. It's really gross.

I bought an 8 pack box of it on sale yesterday at Target. If you can stand them it's free drink day in the break room!

We mostly drink water at my house. Aspartame gives my son migraines. Food Lion makes a Diet Cola with Splenda that I get as a treat when I want a soda, or I make Pink Lemonade from a Kool-Aid packet and Splenda. Kevin Trudeau is a con artist.

    splenda

splenda causes some people to actually retain weight. Strange but true. Unfortunately i am one of those people. I believe the FDA had considered pulling it from the market temporarily a while back.

Diet Dr. Pepper is great, taste better than the original. Diet A&W Rootbeer is excellent and you can even use it with "diet ice cream" to make a low cal root beer float!
