For people that know the Triangle: I say south of Garner, in the Cleveland school area....40/42 area, exit 312. For out-of-towners: near or south of Raleigh. It so confusing...!!! But I have friends with a Raleigh address and they don't live anywhere near Ral. They live just over the county line on 1010....so its that way all over the area.
Cleveland School I know that "horse was beat to death" a few years ago when they tried all those place naming procedures, but I always felt that "Cleveland School" would be best. I grew up in this area and that's what it was always called. Also the crossroads of Hwy 42 and Cleveland Rd. was called Drug Store or Old Drug Store. That was official on state highway maps. Not sure where the "Springs" are?
I Live in the Cleveland area at Hwy 40-42. I notice not many people here are actually from cleveland. Hummmmm.
cleavage this discussion has been going on ever since i40 openned up. if you look at old maps of johnston county you will see "old drug store". all of the county road signs point to "cleveland school". "cleveland, nc" is in davidson county. my opinion is that if we don't agree on some name for our community fairly soon we will wind up as "west clayton". several years ago the cleveland post sponsored a contest to come up with a name. i suggested "cleavage" but nobody took me seriously. bl
I always say OLD Cleveland School, for those that have some idea of this area. We do not live at or very near 40/42 or the Old Drug Store. If I said at the Polenta Post Office you all would be even more confused. Area history buffs can PM me for clues on that one... At one time we received our mail from Clayton, phone service from Smithfield and I went to school in Benson. That was when we were known as the living in the twigs, we were too small to be in the sticks. -Kelster
