Dang, I didn't realize ya'll was already talkin' about the Hoax Theory... woulda made my post a little funnier. I gotta be quicker on the draw!
i wasn't born yet. Also, there is a retro-reflector on the moon. Hit it with a laser, and you'll get proof. Or watch the mythbusters do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orvMZn8L1f0
I was 6 going on 7....but to be honest, I really don't remember where we were at and what we were doing.
I watched it take off, well close enough anyway. I lived in St Peterburg, Florida at the time, and watched it from my grandparent's back yard in the trailer park. It was very distant, not very big, but very bright. A neighbor was watching, and pointed it out to me and my sister. I was only 9 years old, and didn't realize the importance of what i was watching.
There is an interesting story about the landing in Reader Digest (not sure if it is this mo or last mo issue).
I wasnt born yet either ('71) but I did grow up in a little town next to Wapakoneta, Ohio, Neil Armstrong's home. There is an air and space museum there in his name shaped like the moon. They have their little celebration for the native son every year and every year he doesnt come for it if my memory serves me right. http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/places/nw01/index.shtml
i was a kid watching it on the TV in the living room with my brothers & sister and totally amazed - my Mom recorded it on her reel to reel and still has it to this day - great memory of sitting there just waiting for it to happen all together.
I was only almost 3 - so I do not remember it. Like others have said, I enjoy the coverage. All of the space stuff is very intriguing to me.
We were living in Tampa, Florida. Took a station wagon load of kids with us to Cape Canaveral to watch liftoff. Our neighbor kept our 9 month old daughter and their kids went with us. Every time we are in touch with these friends they remind us of the great view we had of the liftoff. Something you will always remember. We returned several times for other liftoffs but Apollo 11 was special. A Clayton native and N.C. State graduate in Aeronautical Engineering, Sam Beddingfield, worked at Cape Canaveral during this time. He was a 1953 graduate of Clayton High School. His father and uncle founded Beddingfield Drugs that continues to operate on Main Street in Clayton. After retiring Sam was frequently a consultant on major television networks whenever something important was happening with the space program. Sam Beddingfield was a special guest speaker at our Clayton High School 100th Reunion celebration in 2004. Great memories!
