Day care is available if you file the long form, it's just the daycare page of the 1040-A that is not available yet. Easy work-around for that is just to file the long form, even if you otherwise qualify for the short form. Mortgage interest is on Schedule A, and that was not delayed. The only one that affects a lot of people is education credits. From the IRS web site: That Form 8396 is a credit for mortgage interest that you only get if you have a certificate from your state or local government, I'm not even sure what that's all about. But most people don't have that. Most homeowners do itemize deductions and claim their mortgage interest and taxes on Schedule A.
plus if you are using turbo tax...you just plug numbers in, you don't need it in writing if you can figure it out through your checks, like I did. YMCA was ahead of the game for the first time ever, their numbers came early in the mail.
No, I know you can go online and get your own numbers..... I'm not talking about what the daycare, or your mortgage company would have sent to you.... I'm talking about the tax forms that the IRS gives you in order to file your returns. I thought I understood it that even Turbo Tax wouldn't let you file until 2-11 if you needed those forms? Maybe I misunderstood it...
Jen, please review my post above. There are 5 forms that are not available until February 11, and you cannot file before then if you need to use one of those. Most tax returns do not require any of those 5 forms.
I just did. I thought the Mortgage Interest credit form was the form where you claimed the interest you paid on your mortgage? Dumb me I suppose. Thanks for clearing it up, I guess I'll get all my forms together and go ahead and file, lol...
That mortgage interest thing is confusing. But the form that is not available is for a "First-time homebuyer's credit" thing, and I have never seen anybody who actually got that. All the rest of us claim our mortgage interest as an itemized deduction on Schedule A. The child care credit attachment for the 1040A is not available, but the solution to that is to file 1040 instead. You will use 1040 anyway if you itemize deductions to claim your interest and taxes on your house.
This is something new, but you are now allowed to deduct the PMI insurance that you pay. It should be listed in box 4 on the mortgage statement, if you paid it. PMI is not homeowners insurance, that's also reported separately but it is not deductable.
Just finished our taxes.. Love Turbo Tax. This is the 9th year that we have used it and it seems to get easier and easier every year. FYI... If you have State Farm Insurance, you can go to statefarm.com, sign in and then access Turbo Tax. It will save you alot of money. For Turbo Tax Premier plus e-filing for Federal and two state returns, cost me a whoppin $20. That included purchasing the Tax program and the filing fees..
My State refund check was in today's mail.... Just went on IRS.gov and clicked 'where's my refund', and it says, 'your refund will be direct deposited on 2/8/2008'....sweet! I love turbo tax too.
