I'll definitely wait for the shot. I don't want that mess squirted up my nose. I'm not afraid of needles but I HATE ear drops, eye drops and nose drops.
The answer is No and No I'll just continue my routine of keeping enough alcohol in my system to keep all the bad germs killed off.
On a side note, at the rate some of our customers are ordering packaging for it, there will not be any shortage, except for the initial shipments.
Yep, I don't have a choice working the the ER. If we want to decline we have to document a "good" reason and it goes up the chain of command. But...i'd get them both anyway.
DH & I both already took our regular flu shots and plan to get the H1N1 when they release it to the general public. I figure there will be approx a month between the time that they give it to the first group of people and when they release it to the general public and that will be enough time to see if there are any adverse reactions to it. If not, I'll be rolling up my sleeve....no time to be sick with the flu with the holidays coming up....
Doctor Sanjay Gupta has had H1N1 from my understanding. He said it was the sickest he had been with a couple of days of throwing up and diarrhea non-stop with high fever. I had never had a flu shot up until my son was born. He has an elevated risk with fever so anything that can help control it we're in favor of. The last time I had a bad case of the flu was in late '99. Severe achiness, dizziness, high fever, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, etc. I haven't forgot that nor the night pneumonia took me down fast and hard. Preventative is best and if foregoing the vaccine, know when to head for the doc or hospital. Also, plenty of fluids. If you can't hold down fluids, its time for an IV.
No way!!! The H1N1 vaccine is too new & untested. I definately don't won't them testing the vaccine on my kids. One bad vaccine experience was enough for my family.
I don't know. I don't work with but 1 or 2 other people. But DS is in elementary school. I've never, ever had a flu shot. I have however, had the flu twice and felt like I'd have to get better to die. On the other hand, not sure I trust the new H1N1 vaccine either. It's a crapshoot.
Another side note...the dr did tell me the nasal spray is a live vaccine, meaning there is more of a chance to get the flu from it. I honestly don't know. I don't normally worry about it, none of us have gotten the shot the last 2 years, and none of us have gotten the flu the last 2 years either. But everyone is in such a panic this year about the flu, and several people have already had it, so still debating. Probably will not get the H1N1 shot though...
The nasal spray is a live virus, but is weakened. That's why they advise anyone who is not otherwise healthy to wait for the shot. I've read several university studies that show that the H1N1 is much more contagious and likely to infect the lungs. By what is reported, there is no difference in the development process of the vaccines. They are still made with viruses cultivated in eggs. The H1N1 is just another influenza strain, but one that we have not experienced before. Plus, keep in mind that the seasonal flu is everchanging. I don't expect any difference between the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal. I do expect that next year, the H1N1 could change on us and will require another vaccine for next year...probably incorporated into the seasonal vaccine. That's just my guess.
I personally know 2 people who have actually had the H1N1 flu and they both said they have never been sicker in their entire lives. They both said they have had the regular flu in past years & it was bad but the H1N1 was WAAAAY worse than the regular seasonal flu. Both of these people are pretty tough cookies and dont whine & exaggerate over every little sniffle & sneeze, so when they say it was really bad, I believe them. Yep, if all goes well with the first rounds of H1N1 vaccines, DH & I will be getting ours when they release it to the general public.
Nope, won't get regular or H1N1 flu shots for myself or children. Never get regular flu shots, why start now. Didn't even do it when my youngest was a high risk (didn't do it because I didn't want to and doc was against it for him as well due to other vaccination reactions).
You are so right. If you don't it might not effect you to much, but you might give it to someone will a lowered immune system and they might die. I would not be able to live with myself if I caused someone else to die or become very sick. It's just a little poke and it is a dead virus. The mist is just a little moisture squirted into your nasal passage. Be safe not sorry!!!! :hurray:
Yep. No health insurance. Riding spouses policy is way too high..about 400 per month for minimal benefits... Paid the cash at Walgreen's for the regular flu shot (get one every year)..and hope to get the H1N1 shot as soon as it is available.
The H1N1 shot has been tested and they had no adverse reactions. I had the flu one year so bad that I thought I was going to die, I don't want to ever go through that again, it took a lot out of me. It was about 6 months until I was back to my normal self. If you have children you must think of them, they are at high risk!!!!
I already had my flu shot - work requirement. I am sure I will be asked to get the H1N1 also since I work around a lot of immunocompromised patients. My kids always get the regular flu shot and I will most likely get them the H1N1 when it is available. Hubby also works in healthcare so he will get them also.
I work in healthcare, have already had the seasonal flu shot, will get H1N1 when it is available. (not required, altho highly reccommended, by my employer) Flu always treats me bad. I get the shot every year. When I have contracted the flu, I have ended up with bronchitis almost every time. Then I am sick for a month. Would rather have a shot any day. Seasonal flu shot is always a guess as to what flu virus they think will be making the rounds that year. Some years they guess better than others. That is why you can get immunized, and still end up with the flu. They start the process of making it long before flu season starts.
Were skipping the H1N1 shot. My kids pediatrician told us she isn't recommending it because of the unknown side effects..so we are passing on it.
