I can attest to this, my baby got the flu shot, my two middle did not get as yet, our ped did not have them in, the two middle now have the flu, regular, not swine, and the baby does too, but a lot milder than the other two, her temp has not gone above 100, whereas the other two have been spiking at 102/103, and she's in much better spirits than her older siblings.

I promise ... when it comes to the discussion of vaccines or anything else ... I am thinking of my kids :) I love my childern dearly and I would hate for a bad decision on my part to be the cause of one of my children being injured or worse yet ... killed. The worst decision I've made in my lifetime was to have my son vaccinated with the rotashield vaccine. It was supposedly tested and had no major side effects .... WRONG. My son almost died after recieving the vaccine. It was removed from the market a couple of months later. It will be a cold day in hell before my kids are ever given a new vaccine again.

Vaccines are a tough subject at my house. My kids are, for the most part, up to date on their vaccines. I research all vaccines before I let my kids have them. I want to know that the rewards outweigh the risks. I realize the importance of vaccines and all the good they have done. However, I am also very aware of many holes that exist in the vaccine approval proccess. I don't want my kids to be counted in the numbers on VAERS the next time a new vaccine is recalled due to safety issues.

I think the most important thing to remember is that this is basically the same old flu shot developed with the same process. Nothing is different, except the virus that is used. I can understand the reluctance. We have all had flu shots with no problems, so the injections should be no cause of concern for us. The dilemma we have (as with others) is that the injections are probably a couple of weeks away at best. Meanwhile, the CDC continues to report widespread H1N1 cases throughout North Carolina. None of us have ever done the FluMist. Do you wait for the shot? Do you go ahead with the nasal spray? It takes a week (maybe two) for optimum protection, so that means a shot given in the third week of October will likely offer little protection until a week or so into November. These kids have to go to school and be around other kids. The flu can be contagious a day prior to symptoms. Parents sometimes carry kids to school when they are running fevers or throwing up or coughing or sneezing. Its not all about washing your hands. The only thing you have to do is simply walk through the tiny droplets that are sneezed or coughed into the air and you've got the flu.

If the shot was available today, I would definitely be heading to the pediatrician's office, but the FluMist variety I have no experience with.

Not getting the H1N1 for myself or my kids. We did all get the seasonal flu shot, except for the oldest son...he had the flu on the day to get the shot! The dr thinks he has H1N1. He has been sick for 5 days (high fever, bad cough/congestion). The youngest got his seasonal flu shot Saturday and was running a fever by Sunday and is still out of school with the coughing/congestion. The dr. thinks he has seasonal flu. I don't know...does he have a milder version of H1N1 or a reaction to the shot? All I know is we always get the seasonal shot and never have a reaction. The dr. said there was no reason to test because there is a 40-70% chance of a false result and the treatment is the same...fluids, rest, etc. I hate seeing them so sick!!

Tough flu season on tap. Ya'll take care!

It's made EXACTLY the same way as seasonal flu vaccine.

Nope, I got the reg flu vax and both of the kids survived H1N1 so the doctor said having the flu will make you more immune than the vax... so nope.

Same here. Kids missed the week at school, but came through it. We do get the seasonal though. On another note, I went today to the dr. again because I still had a cough from bronchitis 6 weeks ago and he said I could have pertussis (whooping cough)! You might want to add that to your vaccine list. The kids got the booster over the last two years, so they are fine. Just something to think about. I have never coughed so much day and night in my life! I should have abs of steel!!
