As shown below Justice Blackmun stated it very clearly for most citizens to understand. I am a firm believer in division of church and state. We will see the day when people are sworn in by a witness and not by putting a hand on a book. Heck, if we have to keep doing the book thing and I ever go maybe I'll take Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and ask to be sworn in on that book. If in Alabama Justice Moore was not allowed to have the Ten Commandments in the front lobby nor in his courtroom what right does this judge have to ask (we all know it was actually telling) the defendant to read from the Bible. Certainly the judge could have stated a story with the same meaning but this judge made the decision to have the Bible read. Strange indeed. http://www.religioustolerance.org/const_am.htm "When the government puts its imprimatur on a particular religion it conveys a message of exclusion to all those who do not adhere to the favored beliefs. A government cannot be premised on the belief that all persons are created equal when it asserts that God prefers some." Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun. 1 Sherry
