So I just got an earful at the water cooler from the office hot-head about how hypocritical it is to give to charity and the expect something back on your tax return in the form of itemized deductions. This piqued my curiosity as to why exactly the IRS / Federal Government allows this. I have always thought it was a 'program' to encourage charitable giving, but is it that simple or is there more to it?

    Same

I have always heard the same...I am sure it encourages folks to donate or possibly donate more than they otherwise would have...

I know of those who would rather donate to a charity of their chose than to pay it to the government, which is probably the reason for the deduction being created in the first place.

Yes, it is that simple. It's a "win/win" situation.
